The demijohn with a wide neck consists of a round glass bottle (a glass balloon) and a removable plastic basket that protects the glass bottle.
The demijohn is used for fermenting wine, beer, mead and for storing finished drinks. The large opening turns out to be advantageous for manual cleaning.
